There will be some radical changes to the three week grass court season between the Grand Slam tournaments in Paris and Wimbledon! After hosting a WTA tournament for four years, the pleasant facility in Santa Ponca will become the site of a men’s tournament from 2020 on, offering important points for the ATP rankings and approximately 1 million Euro in prize money. The decision for Mallorca to host an ATP 250 tournament was made possible following an ATP bid application for a tournament to replace the grass-court event previously held in Antalya, Turkey. There was already a men’s tournament on Mallorca between 1998 and 2002, but back then it was played on clay.
The women’s tournament will be transferred to Birmingham which, in return, transferred its WTA Premier Event license to Berlin, where the Grass Court Championships Berlin will be held from 13-21 June 2020. The women’s tournament in Berlin and the men’s tournament in Mallorca will be organized by “e|motion sports”, which has already been organizing the ATP tour tournament MercedesCup at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof. Thus, the company is now responsible for three major international grass court events in Stuttgart, Berlin and Mallorca, while also organizing the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna.
“By organizing three tournament in as many weeks we are facing a big challenge which we gladly accept”, emphasizes e|motion CEO Edwin Weindorfer.
