Thiem Austria's athlete of the year

Austria’s athlete of the year is for the first time Dominic Thiem. The US Open winner beat Bayern Munich star David Alaba and ski jumper Stefan Kraft in this traditional annual poll.

The poll was conducted amongst Austria’s sports journalists. After being the runner-up already three times (2016, 2018, 2019), Thiem this year practically ran away with the votes, gathering 1,183 points, while runner-up David Alaba was able to collect 447 points. Thiem is the third tennis player to collect the “Niki” award after Thomas Muster and Jürgen Melzer.

“I am overjoyed but also want to congratulate all the other athletes”, said Thiem after receiving the “Niki”-trophy. “So many other great athletes have already won this trophy, the winner’s list is really amazing. It is such an honor for me!”
